- Since my youth, I've loved to day dream. But never in my wildest dreams, did I think I'll run my own toy museum. In 1989, while visiting Kota TinggiI, Malaysia, with a friend, we came across a toy shop. I bought a few tin toys that I’ve played with when I was young. Who would have thought those few pieces would lead me into a new chapter in my life!
With I returned to Singapore, my enthusiasm for toys grew. Within 2 years, I had collected about 200 tin toys. The collection included robots, spaceships and batmobile. One fine day, as I was sorting out the collection, I discovered, to my surprise, that it consisted of mainly imported products. In 1993, I visited a famous toy museum in Yokohama Japan. I was impressed by the way Japanese had held on to their cultural heritage – it reinforced my feelings for Chinese toys. Thus the seed to MoST (Museum of Shanghai Toys) was planted.
I'm truly happy that I am able to share my dream and passion through setting up the first Shanghai toy museum in the world in 2005. Inside the museum, visitors can view China made toys dating from late Qing Dynasty (1910s) to Cultural Revolution period (1966-1976). But as experience and resources are limiting factors and as such, the museum might not compare well with others found in in the rest of the world. But with feedback and comments from visitors, I hope to improve on the flaws and improve the standard.
Setting up Museum of Shanghai Toys marks my first major step toward my China Toys dream. With your support, the museum will hopefully help put China made toys on the international toy collection map.
